Most electricity is generated by burning gas and coal, which releases millions of tones of carbon dioxide ever year. This gas tops the list of gasses responsible for climate change. Power is also generated from nuclear power, also environmentally harmful.
You can go green online without much hassle, in fact, you can do it online in 3 easy steps:
- Use a ‘green’ tariff supplier for you electricity needs
- Switch to a ‘green’ ISP (Internet Service Provider)
- Switch off your PC/Wi-Fi box when not in use, especially overnight
More companies are waking up to the popularity of green energy, and the Net has an abundance of information on how you can switch to renewable energy. Most electricity suppliers are now offering a ‘green’ tariff, but the quality, availability and price vary. ‘Green electricity’ generates power using renewable natural energy sources, such as wind power, solar power, hydroelectricity, wave or tidal energy, or geothermal energy. Only 4% of UK electricity is currently generated from renewable sources. Your household could save 1.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year by going ‘green’.
A Green ISP will usually rely on sunshine using solar panels to power their services. You may have to choose between a provider running servers on solar power or a supplier that offsets by buying carbon credits (one credit gives the owner the right to emit one tonne of carbon dioxide). In order to offset its carbon emissions, Green ISP in the UK will plant one tree with TreeSponsibility, a community climate action group, for every new BroadBand customer they signs up.
Want to do more that just that? A good starting point would be to calculate the environmental impact you personally make by using the online Carbon Calculator. Climate care lets you offset your carbon emissions by funding sustainable energy projects.
