Tips on how to start a book club
- Decide what the focus of your club will be. Will it be a gathering to discuss one book critically, or will each member have a turn to purchase a variety of books.
- When will you meet? One evening per month is usually best.
- The best number of members to have is between 6 (for a serious book club) and 10 (for a more social one). Each member could play host in a particular month and a roster can be in place to facilitate this.
- Who is welcome – only people you know or are friends of friends welcome too?
- Decide whether the host is responsible for refreshments or whether everybody should contribute. In most book clubs, each member will bring her own wine, juice or cold drink.
- Monthly contribution. This is especially important in more social clubs where the host has the opportunity to buy a variety of books. Most book shops offer book club discounts, so speak to your local shop owner about registering your book club.
The most important thing to remember when starting a book club is that it should be fun and not a chore. It is good to have a secretary who is in charge of finances and logistics, but try to keep it informal.
