Brendan Fraser is back in another action roll!
It’s time to kick the bucket...

Journey to the Centre of the Earth

Another Brendan Fraser movie? Who would have thought! To be honest I’ve always had a thing for my fellow Canuck and even though he’s had both highs and lows, and boy have there been lows, I’m looking forward to seeing him onscreen again. He’ll be starring in an update of the Jules Verne classic Journey to the Centre of the Earth, and if all the Hollywood buzz is correct, it’s sure to be The Mummy (I couldn’t resist that) of all hits!

Fraser’s character, and I quote, "is a science professor whose untraditional hypotheses have made him the laughing stock of the academic community. But on an expedition to Iceland, he and his nephew stumble upon a major discovery that launches them on a thrilling journey deep beneath the earth..." Ho hum? I wouldn’t be so quick to judge! Remember this is the same Brendan Fraser who had us gasping for more opposite Rachel Weisz in The Mummy and the same Brendan Fraser who had us rolling in the aisles with George of the Jungle. Ad to this a story closely based on a literary classic and you’re bound to have solid movie fare. It also won’t hurt that the entire movie will be shot in the emerging technology of Real D and will give us a glimpse of the future of cinema.

Set to be released on July 11th, 2008 and co-starring Josh Hutcherson as his nephew and Anita Briem as his strangely glamorous mountain guide, Journey to the Centre of the Earth promises to be a thrilling ride second to none. And I for one can’t wait to see it.

The Bucket List

The recipe for the perfect movie is an allusive one, but Rob Reiner (When Harry met Sally, The Princess Bride) is a director that can cook up a storm in Hollywood’s proverbial kitchen almost every time. Add to this the acting chops of Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman and an intelligent script by relative newcomer Justin Zackham, and you have one of the best movies Reiner has done in ages.

The Bucket List is a movie about two terminally ill cancer patients who decide to hit the road and travel the world to check off items on their "bucket list". In the hands of a less competent cast, director and screenwriter this could easily turn into a schmaltzy tearjerker, but The Bucket List is one of the best (and most satisfying) movies this jaded critic has seen in a long time.

Nicholson plays an extremely wealthy businessman named Edward Cole, who after spending time in a hospital room with working class Carter Chambers (the always sexy Freeman) decides it’s time to end their lives with a bang. Coming along for the ride is Cole’s assistant played by Sean Hayes of Will and Grace fame.

The movie offers the viewer a great mix of humanity at its best and most vulnerable with a confident mix of humour and emotion. And even though it might be assumed that this one’s for "us oldies", I can assure you The Bucket List will appeal to every single one of us.
